DAS STUDIO VIRTUAL SUPERMARKET
CREATIVE DIGITAL MEDIEN-IT
DAS STUDIO and our subsidiary “blickfang” have constructed a virtual supermarket for the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift based on the game engine Unity.
Users can walk through the supermarket, complete with background noise, using the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive glasses. Noises are associated with specific objects, such as the hum of the freezers or the bells on the cash register. The volume and direction of the noises, which are delivered in surround sound, are based on the object’s location, reinforcing the immersive experience.

Shelves are created using different techniques, so that users can compare the results. Many shelves are filled with photos, for instance, that can be moved to the foreground or background. Some other shelves already hold various “correct” 3D packages that can be viewed from every direction. These have been specially optimised for this kind of real time 3D application. This allows you to “walk through and experience” a complete supermarket in full size.
Shelves can then be cleared of packages and re-filled as needed. This step can be completed automatically based on stock lists, or “live”, for instance alongside customers.
This opens up new possibilities for category managers and FMCG/CPG sales in retail, either with the Oculus Rift or in a browser window.

One special feature allows users to integrate point of sale objects, such as displays, ceiling banners, shelf strips, or wobblers into the virtual supermarket. This makes it possible to import drafts of new displays out of the 3D visualisation program from Esko, “finish” them, and then present them to customers – with Oculus Rift or without glasses in a specialised browser on your monitor – in a supermarket they can walk through.
